The day has come, and as expected, Apple has started selling its innovative new smartphone, The iPhone X.

Without a doubt, it’s a leap forward for Apple and a new price tag for this premium device. As reported in the media, there are some iPhone 8 customers who are already planning to switch to the new device- anticipation for this devices is indeed high.

Starting now, Perfecto customers around the world can already start validating their apps on this new device with iOS11, in a cloud environment.

The expectations are that many apps will suffer from glitches due to the new features of this phone:

  • New screen size – all display
  • New display of 5.8” 
  • Wireless charging capabilities
  • New authentication method via Face ID over the existing fingerprint that is supported in the previous iPhones.
    • TrueDepth camera enables enhanced capabilities including the Face ID.
    • Face ID is the new door from iPhone X to most secured apps including Apple Pay and more.
  • Specific gestures for user engagement – instead of pressing the home button, swipe up takes users to the home screen regardless of the app they are using.
  • New chipset (A11 Bionic) produces by far higher performance and computing power than previous devices, as well introduces new opportunities around augmented reality and more for developers. That immediately impacts apps performance, but maybe also carries a price in battery consumption.

While there are many cool innovations introduced with the new device, we need to acknowledge the iOS11 reality- so far, it’s proved to suffer from lower adoption than usual, together with quality issues, that resulted already in 4 bug fix releases.

Customers need to make some unique testing-related changes to accommodate the new iPhone X.

Test scenarios ought to include few unique paths to cover the following:

  • New swipe engagement moving apps to the Home screen
  • Authentication cases now need to be done via Face ID and not fingerprint
  • UI testing and visual testing needs to specifically be done against the device that has bigger screen size and a full display
  • Battery and performance benchmark tests need to be done as well
  • Environment and network condition testing need to be conducted to assure that the new chipset and apps work perfect together in varying
  • conditions.
